The most common mistake isn't picking the wrong beach — it's the right beach at the wrong time. 19 of our 38 verified beaches have seasonal or timed rules.
Dog beach questions, answered
Are dogs allowed on the beach in the US?
It's decided beach by beach — by the city, county or state that manages it. Some beaches have dedicated off-leash dog zones, many allow dogs seasonally or outside set hours, and plenty ban dogs entirely. Every listing here states the rule and links the official source we verified it against.
What does 'seasonal access' mean?
Many coastal towns ban dogs during the summer swim season (commonly May–September) and welcome them the rest of the year, usually leashed. The exact dates are set by local ordinance and differ town to town — check the listing's season line.
Can my dog ever be off-leash on a beach?
Yes — at designated off-leash zones (like Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach CA or Fiesta Island in San Diego), at seasonal off-leash beaches (like Richmond Beach in Washington, Nov–Mar), and on most Oregon ocean beaches under direct voice control. The status badge on each listing tells you which kind you're looking at.
How do you verify the rules?
Every listing is checked against an official municipal, county or state source — the ordinance, parks department page or beach FAQ — which is linked and dated on the listing. We don't republish blog lists or guesswork.
Why does my favorite dog beach show as missing?
We only publish rules we've verified against an official source, and we're expanding state by state. Tell us via the corrections page and we'll verify and add it.
